Hand held game is an electronic machine which is used to play video games. It is light weight and all the controls are in the same unit. Formally one could only play one game in one machine but nowadays there are cartridges that can put in the machine to play different types of games. Nintendo’s game boy is one such hand held game that has dominated the market for these games for a long time.
Companies also launched LCD game units that had colour display however the battery life of these units was very less and this resulted in these games being a market failure. It was the production of rechargeable batteries that made these LCD units popular. Companies started producing batteries that was made especially for the hand held games and these lead to the popularizing of the games like Sony psp. Nowadays hand held games are doing better than ever. The original games boy with its package of the game Tetris has been the biggest hit world wide. Many versions of the game boys were released by the company like the game boy colour. Besides these there were also companies manufacturing different versions of hand held games like the turbo express but many of these failed in the market.
The game boy advance was another major step forward for the hand held games. The game boy advance had a larger screen and one could play the original games that came with the first game boy in this one as it is adaptable to many kinds of games. The back lit screen was changed for a front lit screen. However hand held games reached new heights with the launching of the nokia n-gage in 2003. It combined the cell phone, mp3 player, pda, radio with the gaming device. However this model was criticized a lot due to the lay out of the keys and the cartridge position. The model was relaunched with some of the earlier features removed and with a revised layout. Similarly a combination of the pda and the hand held game was released in 2004 but this too came under a lot of criticism. Now all we can do is wait for another dramatic revising of the hand held games taking console gaming to newer heights.
