A bomber jacket is a loose fitted jacket that has loose waist and cuffs and resembles the jackets that were worn by the American bomber pilots in the World War II. The bomber jacket can be made from nylon or from leather and other woven blends too. The collar of the bomber jacket is of fur or pile and usually has double entry cargo pockets. It also has set in sleeves and with a pocket in the sleeves.
The most popular bomber jackets have been those that have sheepskin collars. There is a special category of women’s bomber jackets from which some are fashionable while the rest are protective wear. The Wilkinson Sword Company developed the first bomber jackets during World War II. Titanium plates were sewn into the waist of the jackets.
The bomber jacket was supposed to function as modern day armor. However the bomber jacket was not very successful as it was too bulky to wear inside the aircraft. The bomber jackets had been created with a grave reason. This is because in World War I the planes did not have enclosed cockpits so it was for the safety of the pilots.
However after the war bomber jackets became a rage in fashion and were manufactured majority in leather but for women the stuff was nylon at times too. Now shearling bomber jackets are also a rage. The fur in the conventional bomber jackets is replaced by wool yet the jackets were warm enough to battle high altitude temperatures. The present day US military bomber jackets are found in the black and sage green color.
Bomber jackets are popularly worn for their potentially intimidating appearance and also to mark a unique style amongst groups like bikers etc. |
