The History of Fashion

Modern Fashion has a long history that dates back to almost 17th Century when fashion was a privilege of regency houses and aristocracy. French revolution represents a watershed in evolution of fashion when regency and aristocratic looks were jettisoned and fashion started to grow more general and Paris emerged as the epicenter of contemporary fashion.

Various historical events along with compulsions of changing time and preferences continued to alter the face of fashion over the next century. Designers played along the popular attires to introduce fresh feel.  Paris retained its reputation as the architect of fashion, but now the shots were also being called from London, Rome and eventually New York.

Industrial Revolution, World War I & II and modern technological revolution liberated fashion completely from its earlier medieval forms. New age looks, that were sleek, forceful, and relevant with a fast paced world were introduced and rapidly embraced by an urban and working population.

Globalization and Internet have finally given fashion its greatest transformation so far. Distinct fashion is no longer privy to distinct cultures. Designs and concepts from Asia, Africa, Europe and Americas freely intermingle to create the culture of global fashion.

A businessman from Chicago and a businessman from Tokyo may very likely be wearing similar suits and of the same brand. Today fashion is acting as a unifying across disparate societies.  Design houses in Paris, London, NY and Tokyo set the trends for billion of people while the rebellious attire of some teenagers playing rugby and basketball set these designers’ imagination on fire. It’s a give and take world of ideas and visions.
