Why Study Fashion?
'I am a creative genius! I have the instinct of a designer, a sense of aesthetics and an eye for style. I know what people like to wear. So why cant I just enter the fashion world with my own design and be the next Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior, or Tommy Hilfiger!"
It is good if you have these instincts, talents and commercial fashion aptitude. However, mere instincts and aptitude will not convince fashion industry to open its doors for you. It is a highly specialized industry and it needs specialists with proven credentials for its successful functioning. A fashion school or college is the very medium that helps you becoming a specialist from being a mere enthusiast.
Fashion schools and institutes integrate a range of sub-disciplines that help you to exactly determine your preferred field of interest in this diverse and colorful industry. They provide invaluable interactions with working designers and industry experts, train in various industry specific techniques, arrange short-term apprenticeship under leading designers, production houses or merchandisers and render an all round exposure that makes you comfortable with the functioning and organization of fashion world.
Selecting a fashion school
If you know which specific field you want to enter in fashion, you could search for a specialist institution in that field and get your degree from there. However, as it happens, most of the leading fashion institutes cover basically all the disciplines within fashion.
While selecting the school, look for its permanent and guest faculties. Generally good institutes have expert designers and fashion world veterans as guest faculties on their payroll. Also check if the school helps students in getting internship and placement facilities after the completion of the course.
Some of the fashion schools may have entrance tests . If your desired institute has one, its better to start preparing for them in advance. The entrance tests typically measure your creative and artistic aptitude and test results are used as guide to determine your fields of excellence.
